BMW has issued a recall for 21,650 examples of its previous-generation ‘E70’ X5 and ‘E71’ X6 SUVs as part of the ongoing Takata airbag campaign.
In this latest notice, the Bavarian manufacturer reports that affected vehicles are fitted with potentially faulty front passenger airbag inflators, that may malfunction if subjected to high levels of humidity.
Should the vehicle be involved in an accident, the gas generator for the airbag could explode when deployed, propelling metal fragments into the cabin – posing a risk of injury, even death to occupants.
Affected X5 and X6 models were sold from 1 January 2007 through 31 December 2012. The VIN list for these vehicles can be viewed here.
Owners of the recalled units will be contacted by BMW Group Australia, and are encouraged to contact their local dealer to arrange the inspection and repair of their vehicle.
Additionally, customers can check their VIN here to see if their vehicle is subject to an outstanding technical action or safety recall.
