Video: Rogue wheel causes wild freeway crash in the US

A driver’s dashcam in the US has captured a wheely bad series of events that wouldn’t feel out of place in an action movie.

As this Kia Soul driver found out, sometimes you’re just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Footage captured by a driver’s dash cam shows the front-left wheel of a white ute coming loose, and embarking on a path of destruction on a US freeway.

The wheel is seen rolling into the path of a Kia Soul, launching the stricken Kia over the tyre and into the air before rolling and landing on its wheels.

To add insult to injury, the wheel (likely after colliding with an unseen car in the left lane) returns to impact with the Kia again before coming to rest on the freeway.

The incident, which occurred on the Ronald Reagan Freeway in Twin Lakes, California (just north of Los Angeles) was reportedly captured on the dashcam of Twitter user Anoop’s Tesla.

The driver claims his car was using Tesla’s ‘Autopilot’ driver-assistance system at the time and, as seen in the video, successfully moves to avoid the wheel as it runs across the electric car’s lane.

It’s not the first time a car has been captured flipping over an errant wheel either. In the video below, a Toyota RAV4 is sent on a similar trajectory on a freeway at night.

While the driver of the Kia was unharmed, the clip serves as a reminder that sometimes things can happen in a way that gives you no warning, so always ensure you wear your seatbelt … and perhaps check your wheel nuts.
