  • Plug-in hybrid arrives 18 months after first promised
  • One model available, with 50km range and 167kW
  • Priced from $53,440 before on-road costs, up $500 over initial price

After a long delay, the 2022 Ford Escape PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid) has finally arrived in Australia, priced from $53,440 plus on-road costs.

Pricing for the Escape PHEV was first announced in early 2020, ahead of a planned launch towards the end of the year – but COVID-19 and supply constraints saw the car delayed until late 2021, then early 2022, before arriving in showrooms at last this month.

Ford’s first electrified vehicle in Australia, the Escape PHEV – available in ST-Line trim only – is priced from $53,440 plus on-road costs – $500 higher than the price announced more than two years ago, matching the price increase applied across the rest of the range over the same period.

However, Ford Australia has confirmed the price will increase by a further $1000 on July 1, to $54,440 plus on-road costs.

Powering the Escape plug-in hybrid is a 2.5-litre non-turbo four-cylinder petrol engine, mated to an electric motor and a 14.4kWh battery pack for 167kW combined – down 16kW on the rest of the range’s 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.

A continuously-variable automatic transmission (CVT) helps in sending drive to the front wheels. Ford claims “in excess” of 50km of electric driving range, and combined fuel economy as low as 1.5 litres per 100 kilometres in laboratory conditions.

Drivers are offered four modes: EV Auto (electric and petrol power), EV Now (electric only, until the battery dies), EV Later (which holds the battery’s charge level until it is desired) and EV Charge (which uses the petrol engine to assist in charging the battery).

Standard features include a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, 8.0-inch centre touchscreen, synthetic leather upholstery, 10-way power driver’s seat, a 10-speaker stereo, and a full suite of driver assistance features.

Two option packages are available, as well as metallic paint. These are detailed at the bottom of this story.
