This car is definitely not from the motor pool…
Forget two Oscars and a pair of Golden Globes (and probably the SAG and Tony), actor Denzel Washington is parting ways with his real trophy – a 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo (993).
Listed for sale on US online auction platform Bring a Trailer, the black-on-black Turbo was purchased new by the Training Day actor and has amassed just 18,000-miles (30,000km) in its 25-years.
The last of the air-cooled 911s, the 993 series introduced the first twin-turbo ‘Turbo, with the 3.6-litre flat-six offering 300kW and 540Nm and a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 3.8 seconds.
Drive was sent to all four wheels using the same variable torque split viscous coupling system as developed for the groundbreaking Porsche 959 in the 1980s.
The 993 Turbo dropped the large ‘whale tail’ rear spoiler of the 964 Turbo and replaced it with a large, aerodynamic rear deck, which wrapped neatly over the car’s wide arches to conceal the twin intercoolers on top of the engine.
In Australia, the car was priced from $299,900 when new.
Just under 6,000 993 Turbos were produced, with the ‘bookend’ air-cooled generation 911 a favourite with fans and collectors alike.
Bidding for Washington’s car finished after 29-bids (fittingly) at $405,993 (A$540k) which is high for the market in the US, but similar to what 993 Turbos are fetching in Australia (albeit in a rarer RHD configuration).
From the photos provided by the auction, the car looks to be in exceptional condition, and with its celebrity provenance, should present as an excellent investment for the new owner.
