2022 Peugeot 2008 GT Sport gains new electronic shifter

The Peugeot 2008 has become the latest vehicle to swap a traditional gear lever for buttons and switches, though only with its flagship eight-speed automatic transmission option.

The 2022 Peugeot 2008 GT Sport small SUV has joined the list of cars with a button and switch-style gear shifter, Peugeot has confirmed.

Fitted to all Model Year 2022 (MY22) examples of the 2008 GT Sport (which began to arrive in Australia from February), the new shifter sees the MY21 car’s stubby shift lever ditched in favour of a rocker switch for Reverse, Neutral and Drive, plus dedicated switches for Park and Manual shift modes.

It’s finished in satin chrome and gloss black, and sits alongside a ‘carbon look’ finish for the wrist rest. An electric parking brake is standard, as before in Australia.

The new shifter is only fitted to the flagship GT Sport variant in Australia, which features a newer eight-speed Aisin automatic transmission, and the provision for an ‘e-shifter’ design – where the shifter is connected to the gearbox electronically, rather than with a mechanical linkage.

Meanwhile, the entry-level 2008 Allure and GT will retain their more conventional shift levers, connected mechanically to older six-speed automatic transmissions.

The introduction of the new shifter for Model Year 2022 coincided with a $2300 price rise for the 2008 GT Sport – or $4300 compared to late 2020 pricing – though this was also offset by the inclusion of a panoramic sunroof as standard (previously a $1990 option), and an “increase in production costs”.

Other vehicles to feature switch-based automatic gear selectors range from the latest Volkswagen Golf small car, to the ‘992’ generation Porsche 911 sports car.
