The new Toyota Prado four-wheel-drive wagon is due to go into production by the end of this year – but the option of V6 diesel power now seems unlikely, at least at launch.
The 2024 Toyota Prado four-wheel-drive is expected to come with four-cylinder petrol and diesel power – and no V6 option – when it arrives in local showrooms early next year.
A parts and service website for Toyota vehicles seen by Drive has revealed the new Prado will be available with three engines overseas, all four-cylinders – including the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder from today’s model.
There is no sign of a V6 at launch – either with petrol or diesel fuel – and it is unclear if any of these engines will be fitted with hybrid power.
Drive has learned production of the new Toyota LandCruiser Prado is due to commence for markets such as Europe in November 2023.
It would correlate to an unveiling within the coming months – ahead of showroom arrivals overseas in early 2024, pending any unforeseen delays.
Australian arrival timing is yet to be locked in, however production for local showrooms may commence a few months later.
The screenshot below shows the new Toyota Prado will be designated the ‘250 Series’ – a jump from today’s 150 Series, after the latest full-size LandCruiser moved from a 200 Series designation, to 300 Series for its latest generation.
The only diesel listed is the same 2.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder ‘1GD-FTV’ engine in the current Toyota Prado – as well as the HiLux ute, Fortuner 4WD and HiAce van.
Power outputs are yet to be revealed. In the current model since 2020 it has developed 150kW and 500Nm, however it could be boosted to match the 165kW/550Nm of the upcoming HiLux GR Sport off-road ute.
There is no sign of the 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel ‘F33A-FTV’ engine from the LandCruiser 300 Series, or the 3.4-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol ‘V35A-FTS’ from the new Prado’s luxury twin, the Lexus GX550.
According to the information in the screenshot, the 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine is expected to be joined by a potent 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine – which may be assisted with hybrid power.
The image shows one of the three models will wear the ‘TJA250’ designation, and be powered by an engine described as an ‘L4T’ – believed to refer to a turbocharged inline four-cylinder.
Based on Toyota’s typical nomenclature, this is all but confirmed to be the 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder ‘T24A-FTS’ petrol engine available in the Lexus NX and RX luxury SUVs, Toyota Kluger family SUV, and new Toyota Tacoma pick-up in the US.
This engine is also slated for use in the Prado’s Lexus GX twin, where it will be augmented with hybrid power as the GX550h.
Drive has previously reported the 2.4-litre turbo engine is planned to be mated with hybrid technology for the US market, where the new Toyota Prado will be sold with retro styling cues as the ‘Toyota LandCruiser’, reviving the nameplate there after a three-year hiatus.
It is unclear if there will be a non-hybrid version of the 2.4-litre turbo-petrol engine for overseas markets.
The screenshot also shows a new Prado with a 2.7-litre non-turbo four-cylinder ‘2TR-FE’ petrol engine – shared with entry-level HiLux work utes in Australia – which is expected to serve as the base model overseas, but is unlikely to come here.
Keen-eyed readers may note details of the new Toyota Prado’s engines appear to have leaked on the same website that uncovered details of the engines planned for the LandCruiser 300 Series, in early 2021.
As previously reported – and teased last week – the new Toyota Prado will borrow its side profile, and much of its body structure with the boxy new Lexus GX, which is expected to reach Australia for the first time in the nameplate’s history next year.
