Mazda’s SUV range is poised to get another seven-seat option, with a slightly smaller counterpart to the flagship CX-90 filling the gap left by the superseded CX-9.
Japanese car-maker Mazda has been spotted testing its upcoming CX-80 seven-seat SUV in Europe ahead of showroom arrivals some time next year.
Bigger than the recently launched Mazda CX-60, it is designed to replace the about-to-be-superseded Mazda CX-9 as a rival to the likes of the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe.
The CX-80 and larger CX-90 will serve as replacements for the current CX-9 seven-seat SUV, which is due to be discontinued later in 2023 after seven years of the current model and 15 years as a nameplate locally.
Photos of a camouflaged CX-80 reveal familiar Mazda styling in a slightly different size.
Inside, the SUV is expected to be equipped with two 12.3-inch screens and Mazda’s familiar rotary dial for infotainment controls.
The engine line-up is yet to be outlined. Possible choices include mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, four-cylinder, and six-cylinder engines.
Mazda has confirmed that the CX-80 will launch in Australia, further expanding its SUV offerings.
With an extra row of seating, the CX-80 is expected to slot between the CX-60 and CX-90 in size and price.
