Electric bull: Lamborghini Urus plug-in hybrid spotted testing

Lamborghini’s push into the world of electrification will include a plug-in hybrid version of the Urus SUV in 2024.

Following the lead set by sister brand Audi, Italian super-car maker Lamborghini is taking steps toward the world of electrification with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the Urus SUV due in 2024.

The Lamborghini Urus SUV, seen here testing in Germany, is due to receive its first plug-in hybrid option next year.

The plug-in hybrid technology for the Lamborghini Urus is expected to build upon existing technologies developed for VW’s MLB-Evo platform, tailored to meet Lamborghini’s performance objectives.

This platform also underpins the Audi Q8 TFSIe PHEV which has been confirmed for the Australian market.

This move comes as part of Lamborghini’s broader commitment to electrification, as demonstrated by the upcoming Revuelto supercar and the hybrid-powered Huracan replacement. The Urus PHEV will contribute to the brand’s push toward hybrid technology.

Also notable on the camouflaged Urus test car are revised headlights and a sleeker front bumper, which take design cues from the Revuelto supercar. While the overall bodywork seems largely unchanged on the test vehicle, there appears to be some subtle revisions to the rear-end styling.

Under the bonnet, the Urus PHEV will continue to be powered by the potent 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. The electrified setup will incorporate an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack, providing efficient electric-only driving capability while also delivering additional performance when needed.

Exact specifications regarding power output, battery capacity, and all-electric range are yet to be confirmed. However, considering the Lamborghini Urus S and Performante models already generate an impressive 478kW and 850Nm, it is expected the hybrid variant will aim for similar performance levels while enhancing overall efficiency.

The Lamborghini Urus is currently priced from $409,744 (before options and on-road costs) in Australia.
