Police in Victoria have developed a new way to bring car hoons to justice, by sending them an invitation they can’t refuse, to get their vehicles checked for defects. And one car has already been impounded by the operation.
Police in Victoria have found a new way to target car hoons and street racers – without getting in a pursuit or stopping them on the side of the road.
Victoria Police instructed 50 vehicle owners known to be associated with hoon activities to present their cars to police and the Victorian Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Of the 30 cars that were presented for inspection, almost half were found to be unroadworthy.
One vehicle was seized by Sheriffs on account of $20,000 of outstanding fines, while the EPA issued five infringement notices for excessive noise.
Those who were summoned but failed to attend – and did not make alternative arrangements – will have their vehicle registrations suspended.
Operation Achilles – which has targeted hoon activities for two years – has resulted in 363 drivers being charged with 2931 offences, and 375 vehicles being impounded.
Victoria Police claim hoon driving events have decreased by 75 per cent as a result of the operation.
