The GWM Ute has gained an off-road-focused flagship edition. It costs $7500 more than the regular model on which it is based.

- Off-road edition includes visual and mechanical upgrades
- All-terrain tyres, front differential lock added, upgraded 4WD traction system
- Priced from $52,990 drive-away
The 2023 GWM Ute from China’s Great Wall Motors is now available in a top-of-the-range, off-road-oriented Cannon-XSR edition priced from $52,990 drive-away.
On sale in Australia from this week, the GWM Ute Cannon-XSR costs $7500 more than the standard Cannon-X it is based, and adds a range of visual and mechanical extras.
The GWM special edition adds part-time four-wheel drive hardware – instead of the full-time four-wheel drive system on other GWM Ute models – with dedicated 2WD high-range, 4WD high-range and 4WD low-range settings.
The standard GWM Ute has a different four-wheel-drive system which operates in full-time 4WD in Standard and Sport modes, rear-wheel drive in Eco mode, and a dedicated four-wheel-drive low-range mode.
The Cannon-XSR gains new 18-inch black alloy wheels wrapped in taller 265/65 R18 all-terrain tyres, red brake calipers, an underbody bash plate, unique wheel-arch flares, and a “passive front stabiliser … to further enhance handling”.
While not listed in GWM Australia’s media bulletin, the Cannon-XSR is equipped with upgraded suspension with increased wheel articulation and 34mm more ground clearance (to a maximum of 228mm) – thanks in part to the larger tyres – plus a wider wheel track.
The Cannon-XSR adds a front locking differential (in addition to the carry-over rear differential), a Crawl Mode, and a Turn Assist feature that brakes the inside rear wheel to reduce the turning circle on loose surfaces.
There are no changes to the engine, which remains a 120kW/400Nm 2.0-litre single-turbo diesel four-cylinder paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Further visual changes include a new black grille, a new black sports bar and black snorkel. There are also steel front and rear bumpers – but the new front treatment deletes front parking sensors, which are standard on the Cannon-X.
Inside, the only upgrade is a sunroof – the first GWM Ute model to offer this feature.
