A petrol-only, non-hybrid version of the new GWM Tank 300 four-wheel-drive from China has been approved for sale ahead of first arrivals expected in the coming months.
A petrol version of the new 2023 GWM Tank 300 hybrid off-roader has been certified for Australian showrooms – ahead of expected arrivals closer to the middle of this year.
The Tank 300 – a Jeep Wrangler-styled four-wheel-drive from Chinese marque Great Wall Motors (GWM) – is currently available in a choice of two grades, sharing a 225kW 2.0-litre turbo petrol-electric hybrid system.
Australian government certification documents show GWM has received the green light to sell a petrol-only versions, powered by a 162kW 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine.
It uses an eight-speed automatic transmission – compared to the hybrid’s nine-speed auto – but shares the hybrid’s part-time four-wheel-drive system.
Prices are due to be confirmed closer to the petrol model’s launch expected in mid-2023, however Drive has previously reported it may be more then $10,000 cheaper than the hybrid, which costs $55,990 to $60,990 drive-away.
Government documents list the petrol Tank 300 with the same 2500kg towing capacity and 224mm ground clearance as the hybrid.
However, the petrol carries a 225kg-lower tare weight (2106kg vs 2331kg), and 173kg-lower gross vehicle mass (2552kg vs 2725kg) than the hybrid – which affords it a 52kg-higher payload (446kg vs 394kg).
“Pricing is not signed off yet. But we will bring the petrol to market most likely before the middle of this year,” a GWM Haval spokesperson told Drive at a media briefing earlier this year.
Full details of the 2023 GWM Tank 300 are due closer to its showroom arrival. Drive has contacted the company in the meantime for further information on launch timing.
