It’s only a concept for now, but there is a chance this Indian-made electric SUV could make its way to Australia.
Tata Motors – a little-known Indian car-maker that owns British luxury marques Jaguar and Land Rover – has revealed its next-generation Sierra electric SUV, and the production version could find its way to Australia.
The Tata Sierra was unveiled overnight at the Auto Expo in Greater Noida, India, a major motor show near New Delhi.
The Tata Sierra is intended to compete with medium-sized SUVs such as the Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5, and is slated to arrive in Indian showrooms in 2025.
The Tata Sierra follows a similar concept vehicle in 2020, and was one of 12 new cars (including five electric vehicles) displayed by Tata at the Auto Expo.
Tata also displayed 14 trucks, including one powered by a hydrogen fuel-cell.
The unveiling of the Tata Sierra comes amid the company’s current domination of the electric vehicle market in India, and is part of the company’s plan to expand its range of electric vehicles.
Specific details of the electric motor and battery capacity are yet to be released, but overseas media that attended the Auto Expo in India reported a driving range of more than 400 kilometres on a single charge.
Technical data such as vehicle weight and overall performance are yet to be disclosed.
It is unclear whether Tata would be allowed to use the Sierra name in Australia; the name was previously used for the Suzuki Sierra.
Tata says the Sierra name comes from a three-door SUV made in the 1990s for the Indian market. It was the first SUV made by Tata.
While Tata Motors does have history in Australia, it is unclear whether the Sierra electric SUV will make it’s way to local showrooms.
Considering this Indian-made vehicle is already right-hand drive, it is at least a technical possibility.
Tata has had a pot-holed history in Australia. The Tata Xenon ute was sold in Australia between 2010 and 2017 but sold in extremely limited numbers.
