Video: 2023 Suzuki Jimny five-door caught on camera again

Lane discipline among the Suzuki engineers in this video may not exist, but the five-door Jimny 4WD certainly does, with this new footage published of the model undergoing testing in India.

The 2023 Suzuki Jimny five-door has been filmed testing overseas, with some markets more than likely to receive the engine found in the current three-door model – rather then the rumoured turbo or hybrid power.

The new five-door Jimny was caught on camera by Prabhi Singh, with Suzuki reportedly sending a number of prototypes to the Ladakh region of India for off-road testing, according to local publication RushLane.

The video reveals the test vehicle as a ‘hi-led’ variant, indicating the car has been fitted with LED lights as part of a possible styling update.

Perhaps more interestingly, in the rear window of this test vehicle is a piece of paper displaying the specifications of the new Jimny model, and referencing the car’s ‘K15B’ engine – the codename for the 1.5-litre non-turbo four-cylinder engine fitted to the current three-door Jimny.

However, while it’s looking more likely that the Indian-made Jimny five-door will get that carry-over engine, numerous reports have emerged in recent years suggesting Suzuki is developing a hybrid engine for Jimny models manufactured in Japan for export markets such as Australia and Europe.

At this stage it’s unclear whether a hybrid system will be fitted to the same K15B 1.5-litre four-cylinder, or if Suzuki will move to a new turbocharged engine to improve power and efficiency.

Whatever engine is found under the bonnet, it’s all but confirmed the five-door Jimny will eventually make its way to Australia.

“If a five-door Jimny was available to the Australian market, we would definitely ask Japan if we could bring it in,” Suzuki Australia General Manager Michael Pachota told Drive in July 2022.

“The three-door Jimny really resonates with Australian customers, and a five-door variant would be a great addition to the line-up if it were to come to fruition.”
