The popularity of electric cars continues to rise, with registrations of battery-powered vehicles more than doubling between 2021 and 2022.

According to information published by the Department of Infrastructure this week, there were 34,199 battery-electric vehicles (EVs) registered in Australia on 31 January 2022 – an increase of 118 per cent from the 15,682 recorded 12 months prior.

Tesla continues to dominate the sector with 22,259 cars registered – almost double the 11,940 electric cars on Australian roads built by every other carmaker combined.

While this year’s Tesla’s figure represents an increase of 120 per cent from the 10,124 registered at the same time in 2021, the US company has already exceeded that figure just nine months into the year, with VFACTS sales data reporting more than 14,000 deliveries for the brand from 1 January to 31 September 2022.
