Bradley Cooper to play Bullitt in new Spielberg film – report

Steve McQueen’s character Frank Bullitt will be played by Hollywood heart-throb Bradley Cooper in a new film about the detective, but the producers say it isn’t a remake of the iconic 1968 original.

Hollywood movie star Bradley Cooper is set to reprise Steve McQueen’s character in a new film about the famous Mustang-driving detective.

Overseas reports say the new Bullitt film won’t be a remake of the 1968 classic car-chase movie, as originally reported in March 2022, but will be a new story centred around the same character, with screenplay by Academy Award-winning writer Josh Singer (Spotlight, The Post, The West Wing).

Hollywood news outlet Deadline reports Cooper (A Star is Born, American Sniper, The Hangover) will play Detective Frank Bullitt in the new film, with Academy Award-winner Steven Spielberg (Indiana Jones, Schindler’s List, West Side Story) on board to direct.

The original movie is often credited as having one of the best car chases in film history, with the 10-minute scene of McQueen driving the iconic Highland Green Ford Mustang GT fastback helping it to secure an Oscar for Best Editing.

The movie car driven by McQueen – and one of two used in filming – sold at auction in 2020 for $US3.4 million ($AU5.1 million at today’s rates), setting the record for the most valuable Ford Mustang in history.

A number of Mustang Bullitt editions have been released by Ford over the years, with Australia getting the latest version, released in 2019.

There’s little doubt Bradley Cooper’s on-screen co-star will be a green Ford Mustang – likely to be the very latest model unveiled by the Blue Oval in September 2022 – given Hollywood’s current fad of bringing back old characters and their cars.
