Italian marque Alfa Romeo is reportedly developing a supercar. More details are due to be revealed next March.
Alfa Romeo is getting closer to producing a new supercar, with overseas reports suggesting the Italian marque will reveal plans for the limited-edition model in March 2023.
Last week, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato told UK magazine Autocar the Italian car-maker is working on a bespoke flagship model – hinting at an official announcement early next year.
“When you visit the museum of Arese (Alfa Romeo’s hometown), you see so many ideas from our past,” Mr Imparato told Autocar. “Yes, we are working on something ‘few of’ (limited-run) for Alfa Romeo.
“It’s not done yet, but it’s ongoing. The positioning is ongoing. We have so many fans asking for something special,” he told the UK magazine.
Mr Imparato told Autocar the new supercar would not use shared parts from other brands owned by its parent company Stellantis, such as the mid-engined Maserati MC20.
Alfa Romeo’s last limited-run performance cars were the 8C Competizione and 8C Spider, built between 2007 and 2010, and limited to 500 examples each – although the pair used a Maserati GranTurismo platform, engine and gearbox.
While the Alfa Romeo 4C sports car was underpinned by a bespoke carbon fibre monocoque tub, its turbocharged 1.7-litre four-cylinder engine and $100,000 starting price in Australia meant it was outsold by the Porsche Cayman/Boxster, Lotus Elise and Alpine A110 between 2014 and 2021.
Mr Imparato did not divulge into details about what will power the supercar, although earlier reports have suggested the limited-run model is due to be fitted with a petrol engine.
In July, the UK’s Car magazine reported the Alfa Romeo supercar would retain the Ferrari-derived 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 which currently powers the range-topping Giulia sedan.
According to Car, the Alfa supercar could be based on a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis which was intended for the reborn 8C – a project which was announced in 2018 but did not eventuate.
Alfa Romeo has previously announced all new cars it sells worldwide will be electric by 2027 – three years before its parent company Stellantis axes petrol and diesel engines in Europe.
Alfa Romeo’s first new electric car is expected to launch in 2024 as a small SUV – twinned with the Jeep Avenger – while electric replacements to the Giulia and Stelvio are scheduled for 2025 and 2026, respectively.
In Australia, Alfa Romeo’s current line-up comprises the Giulia hatch and Stelvio SUV, although the new Tonale is due in Australian showrooms in February next year – the first of the Italian car-maker’s models available with a mild-hybrid petrol engine.
