MG Australia has added another $1000 to the price of its only plug-in hybrid – the fourth increase this year, and the fifth since it launched in Australia 18 months ago.
The 2022 MG HS Plus EV plug-in hybrid has been hit with another price rise – amounting to a total increase of up to $5700 in 18 months.
In effect since November 1, the HS Plus EV Excite is now priced from $49,690 drive-away, and the Essence flagship from $52,690 drive-away – $1000 increases over the previous prices, in effect from July 1.
An MG Motor Australia spokesperson said in a statement to Drive: “The price increase for the HS Plus EV has been kept to an absolute minimum and purely brought about by rising material costs and continued global supply chain bottlenecks that are affecting MG, like other manufacturers and industries around the world.
“We are committed to maintaining the specifications of our vehicles while minimising and avoiding the passing on of additional costs to our customers where possible.”
The latest $1000 increase represents the fourth price rise this year, and fifth since the Essence grade launched the HS plug-in hybrid in March 2021.
Since launch, the Essence has become $5700 dearer – following a $1000 rise in July 2022, $1700 on 2022-plate stock earlier this year, $1000 on 2021-plate stock in February 2022, and $1000 in July 2021.
Meanwhile the Excite, which went on sale in March 2022, has increased in price by $2700 after three price rises – $1000 this month, $1000 in July 2022, and $700 on 2022-plate stock earlier in the year, when $700-extra metallic paint became standard after the non-metallic colour was deleted.
No other price rises have been applied to other MG models for now.
The MG HS Plus EV Excite remains Australia’s most affordable plug-in hybrid – but the latest price rise has narrowed the gap to the second-cheapest model, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV ES, which is currently listed for $50,490 drive-away ($800 more than the MG).
