When is the new Toyota Prado coming to Australia?

Toyota Australia remains tight-lipped about the next-generation Prado, however its time must be coming soon.

The Toyota Prado in showrooms today dates back to 2009 – and even shares its DNA with the preceding model.

Given the platform is now more than 20 years old, when is the new model due?

The Prado is now one of the oldest platforms in the Toyota line-up, so a new model can’t be too far away.

The Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series arrived 14 years after the 200 Series went on sale; a new Toyota HiLux arrives once every 10 years or so.

The only vehicle older than the Prado in Toyota Australia showrooms today is the LandCruiser 70 Series which is almost 40 years old – and yet is still sold out for two to three years.

Drive recently put the following questions to the sales and marketing boss of Toyota Australia, Sean Hanley, who unfortunately gave nothing away.

What can we tell our readers to give them some insight into next Toyota Prado? Should we be indicating a new model is one-to-two years away or two-to-three years away?

“I really can’t comment. I have no date (to share with you) on any new Prado and nothing to say on any new Prado except to say it’s a great car, stay on it,” Mr Hanley told Drive. “The current Prado is selling well and buyers love it.”

Is it possible the next-generation Toyota Prado could adopt turbo diesel V6 power, a detuned version of the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series engine?

“I can’t go there. I know it’s your job, but I’m not prepared to comment on speculation.”

Will the next-generation Toyota Prado or next-generation Toyota HiLux go on sale first?

“You know I can’t go there. We don’t discuss future model plans. All I can say is (Prado) is a very important car will always play a very important role in our model line-up in Australia. So there’s always something to look forward to.”
