The first pictures from the set of the upcoming Enzo Ferrari film have been released, with some big names attached to the production.
Actor Adam Driver will soon star as Enzo Ferrari in a new biopic about the Italian sports car tycoon.
While a June 2020 rumour had Australian Hugh Jackman in the main role, images posted online in recent days confirm Adam Driver has been selected to play the Ferrari founder in the upcoming film, which is reportedly set during the summer of 1957.
Directed by four-time Oscar nominee Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral), Enzo Ferrari has been adapted for the screen by The Italian Job screenwriter Troy Kennedy Martin from the Brock Yates Novel Enzo Ferrari: The man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine.
Mann was also an executive producer of the 2019 film Ford v Ferrari starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale – with Bale also rumoured to have declined the starring role in the new biopic.
Driver proved his ability to play an older Italian with his depiction of fashion mogul Maurizio Gucci in the 2021 film House of Gucci, alongside Lady Gaga as his wife.
Enzo Ferrari is currently in production in Italy, with Penelope Cruz playing Ferrari’s wife Laura, and Patrick Dempsey as Piero Taruffi – a factory Ferrari Formula One driver from the 1950s.
It should also be a comfortable role for the Grey’s Anatomy star to slip into, with Dempsey a bonafide car enthusiast and racing car driver, having competed a number of times in the 24 Hours of Le Mans over the years, as well as the Rolex Sports Car Series and the Porsche Supercup championship.
Enzo Ferrari is currently slated for a cinematic release in 2023.
