Volkswagen ID.5 GTX Xcite electric SUV concept revealed

A team of Volkswagen apprentices have modified an ID.5 electric SUV with sportier looks, bespoke paint, an upgraded sound system and a skateboard in the boot.

The Volkswagen ID.5 GTX Xcite concept has been revealed – developed by a team of apprentices tasked with designing a sustainable, electric show car for the German car giant.

Unveiled shortly after Volkswagen’s off-road-focused ID. Xtreme concept, the ID.5 GTX Xcite is pitched at on-road driving, with a team of 14 young apprentices collaborating on the project.

Based on the Volkswagen ID.5 GTX electric SUV, the Xcite concept adds matte and gloss paints sourced from Volkswagen and Lamborghini, and powder-coated 22-inch forged aluminium wheels with a design inspired by the ID.5 GTX’s standard 20-inch alloys.

The Volkswagen ID.5 GTX Xcite sits lower than the standard car and features extended wheel arches, with gloss black trim highlights on the front and rear bumpers, badges and tail-lights delivering a more aggressive look.

Grey Alcantara fabric and black vegan leather has been used to upholster the Xcite’s interior, contrasted with bright orange stitching and trim highlights. The project’s logo has been embroidered onto the front headrests.

While the 12-inch infotainment screen carries across from the production Volkswagen ID.5 GTX, the Xcite is equipped with a more powerful 2000-watt sound system.

Bang and Olufsen provided upgrades to the concept’s standard speakers, however the electric SUV’s boot has been overhauled to include five speakers from audio specialists Gladen, as well as 10 Musway amplifiers.

There’s also a GTX-branded electric skateboard mounted to the rear parcel shelf, which Volkswagen says is the “perfect companion for the last few metres from the car park to the driver’s destination.”

Under the skin, the Volkswagen ID.5 GTX’s 82kWh battery is unchanged, supplying power to the dual electric motors which can produce up to 220kW.

Volkswagen Australia has previously said it is preparing the ID.5 (plus its ID.4 SUV and ID.3 siblings) for a local launch at the end of 2023 – more than a year after the GTX went on sale in Europe.
