US Corvette owner Scot Burner smoked his way into the record books – and he did it all in reverse gear.
A 2017 Chevrolet Corvette driver in the US has set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest mile driven in reverse.
It took Scot Burner one minute and 15.18 seconds to drive his Chevrolet backwards across the mile (1.6 kilometres), completing the task at the Corvette’s spiritual home in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where it was built.
“Scot knew he could break the record when spotting that the previous record was a time in which he had already unofficially beaten,” Guinness World Records wrote on its website, “So he decided to make it official and achieve a Guinness World Records title.”
The event took place at the National Corvette Museum Motorsport Park, though it didn’t all go without a hitch.
During the record-breaking second run, Mr Burner let the car bounce off its electronically-controlled rev limiter, which – when combined with the lack of effective airflow through the front-mounted radiator – meant the 6.2-litre V8 began smoking heavily due to burning oil.
On his YouTube channel – aptly named Always In Reverse, in which he tests the top speed of different cars in reverse – Mr Burner found the seven-speed manual C7 Corvette hit a top-speed of 87km/h going backwards, thanks to its 343kW power output.
