The navigation software has been blamed for prompting a family to drive down the wrong track in a remote corner of NSW.
A family rescued from outback New South Wales has blamed Google Maps for sending their Hyundai Tucson down an inaccessible track, according to 9News.
Despite a single asphalt road connecting the remote towns of Tibooburra and Packsaddle in the north west of NSW, it’s understood the Hyundai Tucson was located about 50km southeast of Tibooburra.
With the Hyundai bogged and no mobile phone reception in the area, the family was unable to raise the alarm. It was only after they failed to arrive at Packsaddle Roadhouse that police were notified.
The family reportedly walked for four hours before returning to their car, where they remained for 48 hours before being found by a rescue helicopter.
The GPS navigation app may have calculated a slightly shorter distance by using the track rather than continuing on the Silver City Highway.
Those travelling in regional areas are reminded to let others know of their itinerary, and to bring a UHF and a personal locator beacon, as well as extra food and water in case of an emergency.
