According to an internal document, BMW could offer the M2 with optional all-wheel drive for the first time when the new-generation model arrives.
The 2023 BMW M2 could eventually be offered with the option of all-wheel drive, according to a leaked technical document.
The high-performance M2 coupe is expected to launch later this year with its traditional rear-wheel-drive layout, but an internal service memo published on the Bimmerpost forum shows BMW’s new coupe could be available with ‘M xDrive’ all-wheel drive as an option in the future.
While this is the first time we’ve heard about an M2 xDrive, the information suggests its drivetrain is borrowed directly from the all-wheel-drive version of the larger M4 Coupe.
Like its sibling, the M2 xDrive would be offered with five different driving modes to help in varying conditions, with the front axle only coming into play in low-traction situations.
BMW has also previously confirmed the new M2 will use the same 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline six-cylinder petrol engine from the M3 and M4, with both manual and automatic transmissions set to be available.
Performance figures have yet to be announced, but rumours suggest the rear-wheel-drive M2 will be detuned by 20kW to 335kW, to help differentiate the model from the more expensive M4 Coupe.
The 2023 BMW M2 is expected to be unveiled in October, though it’s not clear whether the xDrive variant will be announced at the same time, or introduced at a later date.
However, some reports suggest it will not form part of the launch model range.
