A shrunken seal on the rear window could cause the glass to shatter on the Mercedes-Benz X-Class, according to the recall notice. But the Nissan Navara twin is not affected.
Mercedes-Benz Australia has recalled 5889 examples of its 2018-2019 X-Class utility, citing a potential fault with a seal around the rear window.
The recall notice lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: “Due to a manufacturing defect, the rear window may have pressure on it as a seal has shrunk causing the window to shatter.”
“In the event of glass breakage, it would break into small, compact pieces. This could increase the risk of an accident causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants and/or other road users.”

A Mercedes-Benz spokesperson told Drive it cannot comment on any specific details of the recall.
However, the company said: “If your vehicle was retro-fitted with a Mercedes-Benz canopy, we will check whether rubber blocks were installed in the rear area of your canopy.”
Nissan Australia told Drive that its Navara, which served as the base for the Mercedes-Benz X-Class, is not affected because its vehicles are built in Thailand and the X-Class was manufactured in Spain.
