Another well-kept, “two-owner” HDT Commodore VK SS Group A ‘Blue Meanie’ has appeared for sale – but its recent history is not all that it seems.
Another 1985 Holden Commodore VK SS Group A homologation special has come up for auction online – just a month and a half after it was last sold, under mysterious circumstances.
Designed to go Australian touring-car racing, about 500 examples of the HDT VK SS Group A were built (the minimum needed to be eligible for racing) – developed in part by racing legend Peter Brock.
This latest example for sale on Collecting Cars is number 412, wearing Brock’s signature on the front quarter panels like the rest – and with 92,590km on the odometer, across “two owners”.
The Collecting Cars listing says the current owner has had the vehicle “around a year”, and is indicated to be one of “two owners from new”.
However, a search reveals the same car (first image below) – confirmed by matching build plates (second and third images below) – was sold by Grays Auctions less than two months ago, at which time the car was also said to have had two owners since new.
The reasoning behind the discrepancy – and the accuracy of the information provided by the seller for the Collecting Cars auction – is unclear.
Just 15 kilometres have been added to the car’s odometer since the auction in May – but the car appears to lack registration plates.
As of writing, bids for the car sit at $205,600 before buyer’s premium, with the auction set to close at 7:30pm AEST today (Friday). For reference, the Grays auction ended with a final bid of $340,100 before buyer’s premium.
While the specifics of its recent history are unclear, photos show the car is in good condition – and is accompanied by the original service history, and dozens of invoices and sales brochures.
“As well as the original service book, owner’s book and purchase invoice, the vehicle is accompanied by a catalogue of historical documentation, including a collection of maintenance invoices, sales literature, magazine coverage and correspondence sent from HDT to Commodore SS VK Group A owners,” the auction page says.
Powering the iconic Australian muscle car is a 4.9-litre Holden V8 tuned to produce 196kW and 418Nm, mated to a four-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive.
A full HDT body kit, Group A decals, a commemorative Bathurst sticker on the rear quarter, and 16-inch HDT ‘Aero’ wheels all feature, with the auction listing stating this particular car is also fitted with an optional performance exhaust system.
The auction for this 1985 Holden Commodore VK SS Group A will end on Friday 15 July 2022, at 7:30pm AEST. Click here to view the listing.
