Think you’re seeing a lot of Mercedes G-Wagens on the road? You would be right – as the boxy Benzo hit a sales record in May
The iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class, or G-Wagen, achieved a record result this month with 103 of the big-box Benzes delivered to customers in May.
A Mercedes-Benz spokesperson told Drive that this figure eclipsed even the months when the previous-generation G-Professional and Australian Defence Force G-Wagen fleet allocations were delivered.
The May result is an increase of 222 per cent over the same month last year, although the 172 deliveries year to date in 2022 is 40 per cent down on the 289 units over the same five-month span of 2021.
A total of 594 Mercedes-Benz G-Class were delivered in 2021, a staggering 120 per cent growth over 2020’s full-year result.
Such is the popularity of the Geländewagen, that mid-2021 saw order books closed so that deliveries could catch up with demand.
The 103 units delivered in May (outselling the Land Rover Defender at 86 deliveries, and Mercedes-Benz GLS at 64 deliveries) is the result of cars ordered in 2021 finally arriving for customers.
The majority of cars are the $314,897 (before options and on-roads) range-topping G63 AMG, which equates to some $25-million, or 224-tonnes (give or take) worth of hefty G-Wagen arrival on our roads.
As reported by Drive, the next-generation G-Class will feature an electric drivetrain, with the car capable of a self-axis-pivot ‘tank turn’ for extreme maneuverability and show-offiness. Just what every G-Class owner wants!
