Volvo electric-car offshoot Polestar’s upcoming flagship will have more power than every four-door Tesla on sale, excluding the record-setting Model S Plaid.
The 2024 Polestar 5 electric sedan will debut a new in-house electric drivetrain offering more power than nearly all of its rivals, Polestar has confirmed.
The brand’s fourth electric vehicle – and flagship passenger car, above the mid-size Polestar 2 – the Polestar 5 large sedan will feature a new “top-of-the-line” dual-motor electric powertrain being developed by Polestar in Sweden.
Polestar “aims” to deliver combined outputs of 650kW and 900Nm – nearly double the power of Polestar’s current most potent car, the 350kW/680Nm Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor, with the performance software upgrade.
A Porsche Taycan Turbo S develops 560kW in launch control (90kW) less, but 1050Nm (150Nm more), while a Tesla Model S Long Range can ‘only’ muster 500kW – though the Polestar can’t match the Model S Plaid’s 761kW.

The Polestar 5 will be based around an 800-volt electrical architecture like the Taycan, enabling higher charging speeds – though how close it will get to the Porsche’s 270kW maximum remains to be seen.
All mechanicals will be housed within a new aluminium bonded chassis developed by Polestar’s UK engineering team, said to reduce weight, increase stiffness and “create a driving experience that is as desirable as the design”.
The car’s styling was outed in patent images earlier this month, confirming its expected resemblance to 2020’s Precept concept car.
A prototype of the 2024 Polestar 5 will be driven up the hill at this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK, ahead of a full reveal and market launch in 2024. An Australian launch has been all but locked in.
