MG’s first brand-new sports car in two decades will draw from the concept it’s inspired by – though it’s not the near copy-paste some expected.
The production 2024 MG Cyberster electric sports car has been given an early reveal through patent images, ahead of an overseas – and soon after, likely Australian – launch sometime in 2024.
Discovered by Dutch publication AutoWeek, the images show the production Cyberster will draw some inspiration from the MG concept of the same name, with shared styling DNA in their front bumper designs, sporty wheels and side skirts, and full-width tail-light bar.
However, key elements have been overhauled for road use. The surfaces and edges have been smoothed or rounded off, there are more conventional headlight clusters, the wheels are smaller and, unsurprisingly, there’s now a soft-top roof and a windscreen.
While the overall style of the rear end is similar to the concept, it’s now clear the tail-lights – initially taken to resemble the Union Jack – imitate supersized arrows, presumably functioning as indicators in the body of the arrows, with the brake lights built into the outer light bar.
The production Cyberster will use a soft-top roof, in line with modern convertible trends.
While it’s unclear if the roof will use manual or electric operation, the latter seems more probable, given the higher starting price the MG roadster will command due to the car’s electric powertrain – compared to the circa-$40,000 sticker of a base Mazda MX-5.
No images of the interior have surfaced, however expect a pair of screens alongside sports seats, steering wheel and trim elements. The divided, infotainment screen-less cabin of the Cyberster concept is less likely to reach production, at least not without major changes.
It’s also unclear what will power the new Cyberster, and whether it will target entry-level sports cars like the Mazda MX-5 or Subaru BRZ, or higher-end coupes and convertibles from Toyota (GR Supra), BMW or even Porsche.
The Cyberster concept quoted a 0-100km/h sprint time of under three seconds, and up to 800km of range – though expect the production car to offer closer to 150kW to 200kW, and a more reasonable 400km of range.
The production MG Cyberster is slated to launch overseas in 2024. An Australian launch is all but confirmed, likely shortly after it arrives in overseas showrooms.
