When the car industry goes electric, the next AMG GT 4-Door Coupe could look something like this: a hyper-aerodynamic four-door underpinned by a dedicated AMG electric platform.
Mercedes-AMG has revealed the Vision AMG concept, as a preview of what to expect from the performance brand’s first AMG-only electric car due in 2025.
Underpinning the show car is a new AMG.EA electric platform, designed solely for battery-electric Mercedes-AMG performance cars from 2025 onwards – with the first model to be a low-slung, four-door, Porsche Taycan-rivalling performance car inspired by this concept.
Similar in profile to the Vision EQXX electric concept revealed earlier this year, the Vision AMG is a ‘four-door coupe’ (read: sleek sedan) akin to a petrol-powered Mercedes CLS, with a long wheelbase, short overhangs and LED light signatures befitting of an electric show car.
It’s said to measure around 5100mm long – 150mm longer than a current GT 4-Door Coupe – with a 3000mm wheelbase, designed to accomodate the low-mounted battery pack.
Up front, Mercedes-AMG’s traditional ‘Panamericana’ grille design remains, though it’s closed off for aerodynamics, finished in body colour, and incorporates LED illumination in its vertical bars.
It sits below the Mercedes star that’s now positioned on the ‘bonnet’ – akin to the long-delayed Mercedes-AMG One hypercar – and beside LED headlights with three-pointed star signatures, and a full-width light bar with welcome animations.
The tail-lights take the shape of three LED rings per side with stars inside, positioned in the lower rear bumper to recall the exhaust pipes of a petrol-powered AMG. This tail-light graphic will be reflected in that of the production model, Drive has been told.
“We’ve taken full advantage of the new platform in both the design and proportions,” Robert Lešnik, head of Mercedes-Benz exterior design, told Drive European correspondent Greg Kable.
“The Vision AMG shows what we are planning – a low and sleek sedan with outstanding aerodynamics and the space to accommodate four adults in comfort.”
Other highlights of the design include carbon-fibre accents, 22-inch aero-focused alloy wheels, an active rear spoiler, and “joints and shut lines … reduced to a minimum”, according to Mercedes-AMG.
The show car is finished in a livery inspired by the Mercedes-AMG Formula One team, with Alubeam silver paint, star graphics across the rear end, and side sill and rear diffuser accents in the colours of the team’s title sponsor, Malaysian oil giant Petronas.
The production car is slated to receive four frameless doors and a liftback-style tailgate, Mercedes-Benz has told Drive.
Few details of what powers the Vision AMG are given, though the German band says it uses an axial-flux electric motor designed by a Mercedes-Benz subsidiary, paired with a battery pack between the axles.
Even less is said about the car’s interior, which can seat four. Unlike the EVA platform underpinning the current EQE and EQS electric sedans, AMG.EA can support batteries under the rear seat, allowing for larger footwells for rear passengers.
“This allows for greater space and comfort in the rear,” Lešnik adds. “We’ve created a very low car but with a long wheelbase. It will be a proper four-seater.”
Exactly how much the production electric cars on Mercedes’ new AMG.EA platform derive from the Vision AMG concept is unclear, though with the petrol-powered GT 4-Door Coupe flagship due for replacement around 2025, its successor could be electric.
