Porsche Taycan electric car outsells 911 globally

The new zero-emission car was Porsche’s best-selling passenger car during the record breaking year.

The Porsche Taycan electric car outsold the iconic 911 flagship during 2021 – both in Australia and abroad.

While a notable price difference between the two models likely played a part, the result does highlight an increasing demand for zero-emission vehicles in the prestige and performance segments.

Porsche’s overall sales were at an all-time high throughout the 12 month period despite the ongoing pandemic, and electrified models – comprising the all-electric Taycan and hybrid Panamera and Cayenne variants – accounted for approximately 40 per cent of total deliveries.

Official sales data for the year showed 41,296 Taycans found buyers worldwide, compared to 38,464 911s – a difference of approximately seven per cent.

In Australia the the swing was even more dramatic – 531 Taycans were delivered compared to 428 911s, representing a difference of approximately 24 per cent.

The split between sedan and Cross Turismo wagon body types for the Taycan has not been published, however Drive understands the vast majority of sales have so far been for the former – particularly given the wagon only went on sale in the second half of the year.

The proliferation of SUVs has also significantly bolstered the once-struggling sports car maker.

The Porsche Macan – which recently underwent its second facelift, and will gain an all-electric spin-off next year – was the most popular model outright, with 88,362 deliveries worldwide and 2328 deliveries in Australia.

The Cayenne full-size SUV became the marque’s best-selling model in

2004 – just one year after its launch – and it was not overtaken until the smaller and more affordable Macan went into full production in 2015.
