The classic family four-door will be relaunched this decade as an all-new electric SUV. Here are the first teaser images of an upcoming concept, dubbed Air4.
The classic Renault 4 will be revived as a modern electric SUV this decade – and its French manufacturer has given the best glimpse yet at what the finished product might look like, with an upcoming concept set to be badged ‘Air4’.
The original 4 (also referred to as the 4L) was a small family five-seater, built between 1961 and 1992.
A four-cylinder petrol engine – displacing between 0.6 and 1.1 litres – sent power to the front wheels via a three- or four-speed manual transmission.
Its modern namesake – a concept version of which was teased overnight in a Tweet on Renault’s official page, expected to wear ‘Air4’ badging – will be mechanically unrelated, however appears to share the same basic silhouette, bulbous nose, round headlights, and squared-off rear.
The new production model will be underpinned by the Renault–Mitsubishi-Nissan alliance’s upcoming CMF-B electric vehicle platform, and could wear ‘4Ever’ badging.
A 100kW electric motor is expected to drive the front wheels, paired to a small battery pack likely capable of up to 400km of WLTP range.
This suggests the latest photos preview a concept, rather than the final production model which will make it into showrooms.
Renault currently offers four zero-emission models globally: the Zoe city car, recently-revealed Megane E-Tech Electric small SUV, Kangoo ZE commercial van, and Twizy ‘quadricycle’ microcar.
