2016-17 Mazda BT-50 recalled for airbag fix

Mazda has issued a recall for its late-2016 to early-2017 BT-50 utes over concerns faulty initiators may cause the side airbags to not inflate in a collision.

The Japanese manufacturer reports that an incorrect chemical mixture could cause the inflator to not initiate, meaning the airbag may not deploy in the event of a crash.

If the condition occurs, this poses an increased risk of injury to the vehicle’s occupants. Mazda Australia has confirmed that no cases of the fault have been reported locally.

Affected BT-50 utes were sold from 29 December 2016 through 4 April 2017. The VIN list for these vehicles can be viewed here.

Owners of the recalled BT-50 vehicles will be contacted via mail by Mazda Australia, and advised to present their ute to their local dealer.
