The 2018 Mini One Countryman and Mini One D Countryman have been announced this week, adding more affordable variants to the SUV’s range – however, they aren’t coming to Australia.

Available from July 2017 production onwards for European markets, the new base models feature 1.5-litre turbocharged engines, the One Countryman using a three-cylinder petrol unit and the One D Countryman three-cylinder diesel.

The One Countryman’s 1.5-litre turbo three-pot develops 75kW of power and 180Nm of torque – the latter between 1250 and 3800rpm – mated to either a six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic transmission.

Acceleration for the petrol version is 11.8 seconds with the manual, while the self-shifter manages 12.2 seconds. Top speed for both is 180km/h.

Fuel consumption for the three-pot petrol is rated at 5.5-5.8L/100km depending on the tyres fitted.

Meanwhile the diesel pumps out 85kW and 270Nm, with peak torque coming between 1750 and 2250rpm. The 0-100km/h sprint is dispatched with in 10.9 seconds, on its way to a top whack of 190km/h.

Fuel consumption for the diesel is rated at 4.1-4.3L/100km depending on which tyre package is specified.

Standard equipment and design differences between the One and Cooper Countryman specifications haven’t been detailed, though going by the One Hatch the entry-level versions of Mini’s SUV will sport a more basic design and specification inside and out.

Australia

Mini’s local arm has confirmed neither the One Countryman or One D Countryman will make it to Australian showrooms.

“We find the Australian market tends to go for higher base specification than European markets, and the Cooper is good value and well-equipped for this segment as an entry to the range,” said Adam Davis, product communications manager for BMW Group Australia.

Currently, the most affordable Countryman is the Cooper grade, kicking off at $39,900 before on-road costs.
