The Genesis GV80 concept has been revealed this week for the 2017 New York motor show, potentially previewing the offshoot luxury brand’s first SUV model.

In terms of its design, the GV80 is more of a ‘love it’ or ‘hate it’ affair, thanks to its bold grille, simple slim headlights and minimalist cabin layout.

Headlining features include a 22-inch curved OLED interior display, which features two ‘zones’ to provide separate driver and passenger ‘experiences’.

Genesis says the GV80’s interior is trimmed with high-quality materials like semi-aniline leather with diamond-quilt stitching on the seats and doors, suede on the instrument panel, polished aluminium trim, and an ash wood centre console.

Powering the luxury SUV concept is a plug-in hydrogen fuel-cell drivetrain – though outputs remain a mystery – and the company says it will “continue to study the benefits of similar alternative propulsion systems” for future products.

Manfred Fitzgerald, head of the Genesis brand, said: “This concept is an important milestone for the brand to share our vision of the future, introducing a further expansion of our product portfolio” – further hinting at future SUV models and alternative power sources for its vehicle range.

In Australia, Genesis should be rolling out the updated G80 (currently known as the Hyundai Genesis, above) and the smaller G70 by the end of the year, though exact timing is to be confirmed.

Considering our market’s hunger for SUVs, it’s likely the production vehicle previewed by the GV80 concept will be high on the brand’s wish list.
