Local pricing for the 2017 Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar models have surfaced online this week, with the sporty mid-sized sedan and wagon twins starting at $89,990 and $92,990 before on-road costs respectively.

This means the new Polestar models are a smidgen under $10,000 cheaper than the models they replace, despite offering more power and better performance, while commanding a $20,000 premium over the current T6 R-Design range topper ($69,990).

Switching out the old model’s 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six for a twincharged (turbo and supercharged) 2.0-litre four, the S60 and V60 Polestars develop a healthy 270kW of power and 470Nm of torque – 13kW up but 30Nm short of their predecessors. Drive is sent to all four wheels via a Polestar-tuned eight-speed automatic transmission.

The S60 Polestar sprints from 0-100km/h in 4.7 seconds, while the V60 Polestar manages to hit triple figures slightly slower at 4.8 seconds – 0.2 seconds quicker than the previous model. Claimed fuel consumption is rated at 7.8L/100km combined for the sedan and 8.1L/100km for the wagon.

Standard equipment includes 20-inch alloy wheels, satellite navigation, bi-xenon headlights, LED daytime-running lights, front and rear parking sensors, leather trim, electrically-adjustable front sports seats, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel and keyless start.

Both models are also equipped with driver assistance systems such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning with lane keep assist, park assist, and rear-view camera with rear cross traffic alert. Dual front, side and curtain airbags are also standard.

It’s been over a year since the Swedish brand has offered Polestar versions of the S60 and V60, with the previous six-cylinder models axed locally in February last year.

Competitors include the dearer Mercedes-AMG C43 (from $101,900 plus ORCs) and Audi S4 (from $99,900 plus ORCs), though the Volvos match both Germans for performance.
